Coming soon phpAV!!

I'm terribly distracted today. I started earlier this week working on an idea I had. I'd been putting off working on it because it was sort of a long shot, but as I went to a relative's house on the fourth, and not all that enthused about fireworks, I took my laptop to do some work. With no internet connection my options were few on what to work on, so I started on the phpAV project. In an amazingly short time I had the core of the project finished and working smoothly. I surprised myself.

What is the phpAV project?

Some of you may have visited my site http://phpBible.org. It's an online Bible script that you can download and install on your own site. But it's got a very large database (the entire Bible, plus two lexicons) and while anywhere from 20 to 30 people download the script each month, there are only a few dozen sites that have bothered to install it, the most prominent of which is the Institution for Creation Research.

Recently I had a chance to check out Google Coop, which is a way Google allows others to use their search engine to create their own, powered by theirs. I have one at http://RareDisease.org as well as http://HomeschoolGold.net. The interface is interesting and uses a technique to load the information I had developed on my own back in 2002. It occurred to me that since I already knew how to implement what Google was using to do their Coop, I could do the same with phpBible and allow people to bypass the cumbersome installation required.

Google Coop allows you to establish certain parameters, then place a few bits of code on a page, which then displays a search form, and when submitted, the results, on the same page.

All I had to do was do the same thing, but with the Bible.

You can see the results at http://LindaCarlton.net/thoughts/bible.php. That particular page needs to be php for the text ads in the sidebar to work, but the code for the Bible search is all javascript, so can go on any kind of page. The project so far requires only 6 lines of code to deliver a fully functional Bible search, that stays on your site! The search form can even be reduced to go on the sidebar of any page, sending the user to the page with the results displayed—still on your site!

I have the domain phpAV.com and will be building the site this week for people to signup, set the modifications they want, and get the code to install on their site. I'm really excited about this because it will allow Christians to more easily provide Bible searches on their own sites, without sending visitors away to another site. That was the intention of phpBible.org, but because it was so cumbersome to use, it was only able to be utilized by a few.

Once the site is completely ready to launch I'll announce it here as well as start marketing it through my other sites.

Very interesting. I will probably want to use it. In a similar, but unrelated effort, see this which are the 35 bible verses that a script I ask groups I provide websites to here to use

I am trying to get a conservative digg alternative going called GOP Hub (GOPHub.com). Anything you can do to help with this effort would be awesome. Plus feel free to submit any articles you write here on your blog :). Take care and have a great week!
