[Ellen] DeGeneres, 49, made pop-culture history in 1997 by coming out of the closet in real life while her sitcom character did likewise. In her character's coming-out episode, [Laura] Dern shared a smooch with the comedian during a guest stint on the ABC series as a lesbian love interest.
Dern, 40, recounted Monday how she couldn't get an acting job for more than a year afterward. "There was certainly backlash, I guess, (that) we all felt from it," she told DeGeneres, who said she
I haven't gotten an acting job in over 20 years (and even that one was a non-paying job). Maybe it was because I once jokingly referred to myself as a male lesbian.
Laura Dern could just as well blame her acting slump on the fact that her father shot and killed John Wayne (in a movie). Or she could be honest and admit that maybe she's just not as good an actress as she seems to think she is. As much promotion Hollywood does of homosexuals, does anyone seriously believe Laura Dern would be "punished" by Hollywood for having an on-screen kiss with Ellen DeGeneres?
